I’ve recently been playing a lot of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Aside from being a masterpiece, it’s also got Hideo Kojima’s name all over it. Literally.
In the run up to the release of MGSV:TPP, Kojima and his publisher Konami had a falling out. They removed his name from the boxart, posters, the lot. But it’s a pleasant surprise once you’re in the game to find you can’t avoid seeing his name. He’s in the pre-credits scene of every mission, and in the actual credits. He appears as a character in both Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain.
After all, it’s his game, his vision. He’s entitled to it. But it doesn’t stop it being funny.
Chris Bratt at Eurogamer shows off the credits in this video:
For a long time now, I’ve wanted to make something that plays with the YouTube iFrame API. Something that lets you put a YouTube URL in and get a video back, like YouTubeDoubler.
Hideo Your Video is the result of a fevered weekend getting something together to keep a joke going. You put a YouTube URL in and it places Hideo Kojima’s credits over the top of them, each one as random and bonkers as the last. Then the video fades to black in the Kojima style, with his final credits over the top.
Sadly it doesn’t work on iOS because it doesn’t let you view videos without full screen, and Android just about works on modern phones in Chrome.
Today I woke up to find people tweeting about it, and it’s ended up on GamesRadar. So that’s nice.
If you’re reading this, Kojima-san - keep up the good work. Can’t wait to see what you do next.
As hits on the server increase, running costs go up too. If you’d like to make a small donation to keep Hideo Your Video running, it would be greatly appreciated. If you have any ideas for more captions (ie “Directed by”), please tweet them my way.
